TAP and deSter Join Forces to Launch Closed-Loop Reusable Tableware for Economy Class Long-Haul Flights

Hoogstraten, Belgium, October 17, 2023 —deSter, a leading provider of innovative, sustainable packaging solutions for the aviation and hospitality industries, proudly announces its collaboration with TAP Air Portugal to introduce a closed-loop concept for in-flight tableware. This groundbreaking initiative, which debuted on TAP long-haul flights on August 1st, encompasses two essential products: a reusable underplate and bowl, revolutionizing how we approach sustainability in aviation.

As a pioneer in sustainable aviation solutions, deSter has already successfully implemented closed-loop concepts with renowned airlines such as Emirates, Etihad, KLM, and Cathay Pacific. With TAP Air Portugal, deSter is taking a significant step forward in promoting circular economy principles within the airline industry. The closed-loop system allows tableware to be used, washed, and reused, significantly reducing single-use plastic waste. At the end of its life, this tableware is transformed into raw material. It is then used to create the same products again containing up to 25% recycled materials, thereby initiating a sustainable and eco-conscious journey.

TAP Air Portugal’s decision to partner with deSter for this innovative concept reflects the airline’s commitment to sustainable practices and environmental stewardship. deSter was chosen as the ideal partner due to its unrivaled ability to bring this visionary concept to life and ensure it remains cost-neutral, aligning perfectly with TAP’s sustainability goals.

Previously, deSter had pledged to make all its products either reusable, recyclable, or compostable by the end of 2025. This launch represents another significant step towards a more sustainable future for both the aviation industry and the planet at large. By collaborating with deSter, TAP Air Portugal is not only reducing its environmental footprint but also leading the way in sustainable practices within the aviation sector.

Catarina Indio, Head of Product at TAP Air Portugal, expressed his enthusiasm: “At TAP, we believe in pushing the boundaries of sustainability in aviation. Our collaboration with deSter to launch this closed-loop tableware concept underscores our commitment to minimizing our environmental impact. By working together, we are not only enhancing the in-flight experience for our passengers but also contributing to a brighter and more sustainable future for the aviation industry.”

David Newall, Director Business Development Europe at deSter, supported the initiative, stating: “deSter is proud to join forces with TAP Air Portugal to pioneer this closed-loop tableware concept. We are committed to creating innovative solutions that reduce waste and promote a circular economy within the aviation sector. Our partnership with TAP is a significant step towards a more sustainable future, and we are excited about the positive impact this collaboration will have on both the airline industry and the environment.”
