Designing a more sustainable amenity kit for KLM Premium Economy
Challenge
KLM wanted to enhance its Premium Economy amenity kit with a solution that supports its sustainability ambitions while continuing to offer passengers a practical and premium onboard experience.
Solution
Working closely with KLM, deSter developed an amenity kit made from REPREVE® Our Ocean™ fabric, produced using recycled plastic bottles collected from coastal communities. The bag was designed for a second life beyond the flight, doubling as a laundry bag that helps contain synthetic fibers during washing.
The kit also includes thoughtful amenities such as a bamboo toothbrush and toothpaste tablets, helping reduce single-use plastic waste without compromising passenger comfort.
Results
- Developed a Premium Economy amenity kit combining recycled materials, practical reusability and passenger comfort
- Designed a dual-purpose bag that serves both as an amenity kit and a reusable laundry bag after the flight
- Incorporated more sustainable onboard amenities, including a bamboo toothbrush and plastic-free toothpaste tablets

Impact
By rethinking both the materials and functionality of the amenity kit, deSter helped KLM take another step towards reducing the environmental impact of onboard products. The project demonstrates how small passenger touchpoints can contribute to broader sustainability objectives while maintaining a high-quality travel experience.
