deSter’s net-zero science-based targets approved by SBTi

Hoogstraten, Belgium, 17 March 2025 – deSter, a leading designer and manufacturer of sustainable and innovative food packaging and serviceware concepts for the travel and foodservice industries, is pleased to announce that the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has approved its near-term science-based emissions reduction target. deSter has also committed to set long-term emissions reduction targets with the SBTi in line with reaching a science-based net-zero target by 2050.

SBTi Services has validated that deSter’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction targets conform with the SBTi Standards and Guidance (Criteria version 5.2). Since 2019, deSter has successfully reduced its GHG emissions by 50%, primarily through Scope 3 actions related to its product circularity strategy.

With this approval, deSter joins an exclusive group of approximately 1,600 companies worldwide committed to net-zero targets. It underscores deSter’commitment to driving meaningful climate action.

Overall Net-Zero target: deSter commits to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across the value chain by 2050.

Near-Term Targets:

  • By 2030 deSter commits to:
    • Reducing absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions 90% by 2030 from a 2019 base year.
    • Reducing absolute scope 3 GHG emissions from purchased goods and services, upstream transportation and distribution, end-of-life treatment of sold products 55% within the same timeframe.

Long-Term Targets:

  • By 2050 deSter commits to:
    • Maintaining a minimum of 90% absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions reductions from 2030 through 2050 from a 2019 base year.
    • Reducing absolute scope 3 GHG emissions from purchased goods and services, upstream transportation and distribution, end-of-life treatment of sold products 90% by 2050 from a 2019 base year.

Philippe De Naeyer, Sustainability Director at deSter, commented:

“Our commitment to science-based targets reflects our dedication to tackling climate change and reducing our environmental footprint. Receiving SBTi validation is a key milestone, proving that the goals we set and the progress we make, are externally verified and ensures we make a real impact. I would like to thank all deSter colleagues involved and especially Fien Van Den Heuvel, our Environmental Footprint Manager, for the dedication and persistence in achieving our SBTi approval.”
